Awhile back I made a post to give everyone an opportunity to ask any question they wanted about this site and Call of Duty 4 in general. Questions that may have not fit in the comments sections of other posts but were still relevant to Call of Duty. You can view the original post here. I didn’t get many questions in the comments section, but received quite a few by email. So are those questions, with my responses for everyone to see.

Whats the overall best weapon in Call of Duty 4?

The many unique game and map types coupled with the relatively even balance of weapon strengths make it difficult to choose one weapon as the best. Just my answer is not a total cope out, I will give in what my opinion is the overall strongest weapon in Call of Duty 4. That weapon is the RPD. With Stopping Power in normal matches it two shots the enemy and in hardcore matches it one shots without any aid of perks. Couple this with a high rate of fire and low recoil with the grip and you have yourself a pretty strong gun. Again there is no single right answer for the overall best weapon, but this is my opinion on the matter.

I really like your site, what can I, as a reader do to help improve it?

The goal of this site is to help people improve at Call of Duty 4, so if you read the site and learn something you have already helped this site and Call of Duty 4 overall. Beyond that linking to and discussing articles on the site with others via online forums, the comments section, email or carrier pigeon is a great way to accomplish the end goal of helping people improve at Call of Duty 4. In regards to the comment section please feel free to argue or disagree with any of the articles, they are not always right and everyone including myself cant benefit from a little spirited debate.

What perks and weapons do you feel are to overpowered and should be removed from gameplay?

I would remove Martyrdom all together and maybe nerf the 3x Frag Grenade perk. The general concept behind Martyrdom isn’t terrible, having some way to still kill people after you should be dead can be a cool and balanced perk. Last Stand was the correct way to fulfill this idea, it is easy for other players to answer, doesn’t contribute to the huge amount of stupid explosions going on. On that same note I would tone down the power level of 3 Frag grenades somehow. With even a small number of players the game can quickly to degrade to people lobbing grenades over walls back and forth without any real interaction going on. Games like that aren’t fun and do not properly test the skill of players

If you could add one perk to the game what would it be?

I would add a perk called “Longshot” that increases the range of weapons by somewhere between 25% and 50%. It could serve as a possible replacement for Stopping Power on Assault Rifles and Sub Machine Guns and bring out of the dungeon of underplayed weapons.

I have trouble seeing enemies before they see me and therefore spend a lot of time getting shot, how can I change this?

Seeing the enemy before they see you is one of the most important aspects of Call of Duty 4. Even if you have great aim and can hit a watermelon from across the map that won’t help you if you get shot without being able to see who did it to you. Playing the game a lot will get your visual senses attuned to seeing targets even when they are heavily obscured and camouflaged. You also have to get in the habit of checking corners and rooms before you enter them so you don’t walk into an ambush. Finally listening closely to sounds basically lets you see through walls and around corners. This isn’t possible for all games like 30 person TDM matches where explosions are happening every second. But in other games like Hardcore Search and Destroy the game can become totally silent at times, and even the slightest motion can tip of the enemy to your location.

I hope you found these mailbag questions helpful, feel free to post any more questions you have or email them to admin@cod4source.com and maybe we can do another one of these.

One of the most common reactions to getting a kill in Call of Duty is to reach for the reload button. It doesn’t matter if you only expended a single round from your P90 or unloaded your whole magazine, your instinct is to reload the weapon. Usually you will be able to reload safely but sometimes just as you reload the enemy will come around the corner and put a shotgun to your face. This of course makes you look like a complete freakin idiot because you had 49 rounds left in the clip and could have easily taken down the enemy if you hadn’t been reloading.

So how do you know when to reload in Call of Duty 4? By my estimate the average kill takes 5-10 bullets, obviously not including sniper rifles. Lets also assume you usually only kill one enemy at a time. Using those general numbers you should only reload if you have less than 10 bullets left in your magazine and are in a safeish place. I have found this rule to be useful and accurate not only in theory but in real in game situations. This rule is also somewhat dependent on your location, if I have time, am behind cover in a well defined allied area I will pretty much reload no matter how many shots I have left. If I am in any place where there is even a remote chance of getting shot I will apply the 10 bullet reload rule. If you apply this rule I can guarantee you that it will virtually eliminate deaths while reloading.

Breaking the reloading habit in Call of Duty can be a difficult process. If you are a compulsive reloader your brain is hardwired to complete this action every time you finish shooting. As a former compulsive reloader myself I was able to break the addiction by only playing with Light Machine Guns. The insanely long reload time of a Light Machine Gun means you can catch yourself and correct your reloading mistake. Once you have stopped your compulsive reloading you simply need to apply the 10 bullet rule which will turn you into a reloading pro. Compulsive sprinting is another bad habit similar to compulsive reloading but is much more difficult to break. I may do an article on compulsive sprinting in the future if there is an interest in it.

Here is a pretty cool video I found on youtube of using C4 aggressively as opposed to using it passively like a Claymore. This is why C4 is so underrated in Call of Duty, people try to use it to camp when Claymores are a strictly better camping explosive. Instead you should take advantage of the C4′s fast timer and use it almost like you would a grenade. C4′s short range is still a big weaknesses as an aggressive weapon but if you play it properly it can be quite strong.

This is probably the most important piece of Call of Duty 4 related strategy information out there. Knowing exactly how the weapons work on their most basic level is the key to making smart weapon choices and in turn improving at Call of Duty.

This chart is totally up to date with the latest game tweaks, and the information comes from the actual program files of the game. Do not trust the in game bar graphs that are supposed to display the weapon stats, they are totally wrong. Be sure to look at the damage multipliers as well as the initial damage for each weapon, when you multiply the two you get the final bullet damage. Last updated September 18, 2008.

Click the thumbnail below to view the chart.

Some quick notes, players begin each game with 100 health, for Hard Core mode health is reduced to 30. Golden Guns or Camo provide no benefit to the weapon besides looking cool. There are also several bizarre exceptions to the Call of Duty weapons data on the chart noted in the list below.

- To hit with the knife the target must be within the middle half of the screen and within 128 units distance wise.

- The AK47′s damage becomes 40-20 when equipped with the Silencer or Red Dot.

- Ak74u Hip Accuracy goes down to Medium with the Red Dot or Silencer.

- M40 damage changes to 75 with the ACOG

- On PCs sprint distance is increased by x1.75 with the P90, on consoles it has been fixed to be 1.

- The M21 also has an increased sprint distance of x1.75.

- Some knifing motions are slower when you have the G3 equipped with Silencer out.

-The SAW’s hip accuracy goes to medium when equipped with the Grip.
