Without a game server devoted to your clan you have no way to take part in scrimmages with other clans, and most importantly recruit new members. That is why it is important to buy your own server for your clan. Let me preface this guide to buying game servers by saying I can personally recommend GameServers.com for both Call of Duty 4 game servers and their Ventrilo/Teamspeak servers. Anyway below are 5 basic things you need to know before taking the jump of buying a game server, Ventrilo server Teamspeak server for your Call of Duty 4 clan.

Choose a respectable company to buy from – This is the most important part of finding a good game server. There are some simple things you can do to check online if to determine a companies general quality. First how does there website look? Is it a single poorly designed page with a link to their paypal account and no technical information on the services they provide? Next read online reviews like this one and ask around about game server companies to see what is good. Finally if you have questions about the game servers email/call the company and gauge the quality of their support staff. It is better to pay a little bit more and get a quality game server that you know will work than to pay a couple of bucks less and have a server that is never online.

Get a game server close that is close to you geographically – If your clan is located primarily within the United States you don’t want your server hosted off in the Czech Republic, because the data packets will have to travel from your computer, across the Atlantic Ocean and then all the way back to the United States to the rest of your clan members. This will create a huge amount of lag and destroy your hopes at a good game play experience. If most of your clan members reside in North East of the USA ideally you want something in New Jersey etc. but as long as you are within your respective country you should be fine

Get Teamspeak or Ventrilo hosting with your game server – Try to get a game server company that offers voice chat via Teamspeak or Ventrilo in addition to normal hosting for the game. Getting voice chat and your game servers through two separate hosting services is a huge hassle, plus if you get it through a single company they usually give you a discount. Don’t skimp out and not pay for voice chat though. Voice chat is very important if you ever hit any level of competitive play because having to stop your game to type in a message leaves you at a huge disadvantage to your opponent.

Make sure the game server supports Call of Duty 4 – Given that Call of Duty is a new and popular game virtually all companies provide servers capable of playing Call of Duty 4. But to make sure check around the hosting companies page for a list of games they support.

Get an appropriately sized server – It is a simple fact that bigger servers that allow more players cost more. If you get a server that is too small you won’t have room for all your clan members, if you get one that is too big you will be wasting money. On the other hand a server with a maximum of 10 players is perfect if you just want a place to do 5 vs. 5 S&D clan matches. You also have to consider whether the server will be available to the public, or only to members of your clan. Public servers cost more than private servers because they tend to use more bandwidth because they are open to anyone and everyone. If you plan to offer a public server to recruit new members a server with a maximum of 10 player just won’t cut it because most Call of Duty gametypes are meant to be played with 20-30 players. For these reasons most clans will have at least two servers, one to recruit on, and one to play clan matches on.

Here is exactly what the patch changes:

It corrects a problem that allowed Call of Duty players to mess with console dvars on multiplayer server matches.

It fixes a crash that happens when a Sabotage matches on Chinatown are tied and go into over time.

Finally it corrects a language error where game icons would show up in English even if the original copy of the game was in a different language.

Again no huge changes to the video game Call of Duty 4 but it is important to download the COD4 1.7 Quick Fix Patch so you can play on all servers and so the video game runs more smoothly.

To improve at Call of Duty you have to improve at not only offensive strategies, but defensive ones. A key defensive strategy for COD4 and all video games are moves that make it more difficult for your opponent to land bullets on their target. In this particular video game you have to be fast with two simple moves, jumping and going prone. You can then combine these to form more complex moves and defensive measures. The first step to being fast with Jump and Prone is making sure you can physically reach them easily on your controls. After you change your controls to something comfortable practice jumping and going prone over and over until you can do it on an almost sub conscious level. The next step is learning what situations to use these moves.

Jumping – Jumping is useful in close range confrontations to avoid bullets. Jumping in long range battles is not going to do anything because you are still easily in the field of view of the enemy. At close range the enemy has to move their weapon considerably to get the target back on you. This gives you time to aim yourself and fire off a few rounds and hopefully get a kill. Contrary to a lot of whining people on multiplayer game servers you cannot bunny hope in COD4. You get decent jump and then a bunch of feeble half inch attempts to escape the gravity of the earth. This makes spamming jumps a bad idea, what you want to do is use the first jump and wait for jump height to recharge, if the battle continues long enough then use the second jump.

Prone – Going Prone is best for mid-long range encounters. By going prone you force the enemy to move their sights and create a smaller target to aim at. This small advantage can mean the difference between life and death. Never go prone in a short range situation because the enemy can just run behind you and knife you in the back, which you cannot prevent because being prone restricts your movement. It is also critical to stay for you to stay on target with the enemy and continue firing while you go prone so you don’t waste the precious seconds gained by going prone initially.

If we combine sprinting, jumping and prone we get something called a Strafe Jump. The strafe jump is simple to execute, all you have to do is sprint forward, jump, go prone and fire your weapon, all in one motion. This makes you an almost impossible target for your opponent to hit. You should use only when the initial sprint isn’t visible to the enemy because in that sprint you are totally defenseless. For example you can use the Strafe Jump to go around corners that an enemy is camping and clear the way for your allies to move in.

There are many other great combinations of these basic moves so experiment with them and feel free to comment and post your own moves.
