OpFor and Marine Camoflauge Imbalance in Call of Duty 4
How players look is mostly ignored in Call of Duty; it’s a first person shooter not a fashion contest after all. But what a player is wearing and their camouflage can become very important if you are trying to take cover from enemy sniper fire. The Spetnez and SAS clothing is virtually the same and the minor differences on each side balance each other out.
Then there is the comparison between the OpFor and Marine clothing in Call of Duty, which is totally imbalanced. All the Marine clothing classes have nice beige desert colored clothing that blends with the generally beige maps. The OpFor on the other hand are mostly stuck with bright red hats and clothing. Take a look at screenshots below of the two sniper outfits for the Marines and OpFor if you don’t believe me. The OpFor sniper is placed at a significant disadvantage because you can spot that red hot without a scope from a mile off. This is more of a disadvantage for OpFor snipers but many of the other OpFor clothing classes are also brightly adorned in red. Now I don’t know whether or not this is realistic, but it presents a pretty huge game imbalance that really shouldn’t be there even if it is accurate in real life.
This imbalance can be helpful though. For instance if you are looking for that little extra edge in Call of Duty 4 clan scrimmages, you might consider opting for the Marine side. That said this is just another example of how realism doesn’t necessarily guarantee good gameplay.
