Deep Impact and Bullet Penetration in Call of Duty 4

Scope AK47 Call of Duty 4Bullet penetration is one of the most complex characteristics and perks in Call of Duty 4. Bullet penetration damage is basically how much damage a bullet from your gun will do after it passes through another surface. To determine this damage value you have to consider both the damage penetration abilities of your gun and the bullet stopping abilities of the surface you are shooting through. For surfaces you basically have 4 levels of stopping ability, tiny, small, medium and large. For gun penetration values you can check out our Weapon Stats Chart. To add another twist the Deep Impact perk increases the bullet penetration of weapons. Lots of information I know, but if we put all together we can make the bullet penetration chart below. Wall Size is shown in the horizontal row, gun penetration in the vertical column. The percentage is the damage amount taken away from your original damage value. DI = Deep Impact Perk.

Call of Duty 4 Bullet Penetration

Lets do a quick example to show how would would use this chart. Say we shot a single round from our M4 Carbine with a damage value of 20 before it hits any surfaces. Our M4 Carbine with “Medium” bullet penetration than encounters a wall with the size “Small”. Using our chart we see our bullet damage has been reduced by 35%, leaving us with our final bullet damage of 13 when it hits the flesh of our unfortunate target.

Keep in mind all these numbers assume you are shooting at the wall straight on. If you shoot at the wall from an angle it will further reduce the damage the bullet does, because the bullet has to travel through more material. So if our M4 Carbine bullet wasn’t going through the wall straight on but instead at a 20° it would only do around 7 damage. Furthermore if that bullet went through at a 45% angle it would only do around 2 damage. So how can I use all this information practically in a game? Besides choosing weapons and perks this show us that is important to shoot straight through a wall for maximum bullet damage, not at an angle.

Lots of confusing numbers and concepts so please go to the comments if you have any questions.

If I understand your chart correctly, does this mean using ‘Deep Impact’ is pointless for all sniper rifles which are rated for ‘High’ penetration? It does not appear there is any value in using DI because the numbers are exactly the same for ‘High’ and ‘High DI’ on the chart above. Finally, in one of your earlier articles on best classes, I believe you indicated that you liked a sniper rifle with DI, but that seems like it would be a waste based on the data presented here. Any thoughts? What am I not understanding?

Sorry it took me so long to respond here. As I have stated many times before Deep Impact is a complicated perk, and the table doesn’t not illustrate every single aspect of the perk. For your example of Sniper Rifles, Deep Impact is still a valid perk choice. High = High DI only if the bullet enters the material straight on at a 90 degree angle. If you stray from that 90 degree angle assumption High != High DI. For example a High DI bullet entering at a 45 degree angle will do twice the damage of just a High bullet entering at that same 45 degree angle. There are other smaller differences between High and High DI bullets, for example High DI bullets cause the target to stumble more when they are hit. Hope this explanation was relatively clear, as I said it’s a very complex aspect of the game.

does DI effect the bullet impact on players, if so could you could possibly get a 4 person collaterail damage?

what are the bullet penetration stuff for snipers? (example: barret is high, m40a3 is medium, etc. i dont know if this is true but some1 plz tell me )

Is there an equation or more data that I am missing like for example does MP5 do more penetration by like a decimal point or something. And how do you calculate the damage reduction? I am trying to create and excel sheet that will calculate using a given gun at a certain distance how many shots in the head or different parts of the body will do X amount of damage. I would REALLY like to add bullet penetration to that going trough walls and stuff but, is that as accurate as it gets or does it get more accurate?

here is the weapon penetration values from highest to lowest: barret.50cal;snipers+lmg;assault rifles;smg+shotgun;pistols

DI will make your gun one rank higher, example an asssult rifle with DI will have an lmg penetration value. a pistol with DI will have the smg penetration value and the barret.50cal with DI, HOLY S**t

if u shoot through a wall but your not shure where the ennemy is exactly, hip fire(if your close of course. if not aim your sights and shoot everywhere.) also SILENCER+ASSAULT RIFLE+SP+DI=amazing combo. because shooting throguh a wall youl be constantly on the radar and distracted. you almost need stopping power with deep impact, perfect compliment. and assault rifles have the highest penetration out of the silenceable guns.

and as mentionned, shooting perpendiculaire(90*) is the best. NEVER shoot at more then 30* away

Ok As a said before I want to find out at going through x amount of material how much damage reduction is done with a certain gun that has a certain penetration value and be able to add Deep Impact to this as well. Question, what kind of values does this equation have, is Low Penetration rated as 1 and high rated as 3 and high with DI as 4 (reason is that there is no difference between medium and high and so high should have a impact after a more than large wall. What does tiny, small, medium, and large mean to game size kind of walls, and what distance in whatever the game is measured in (like a rifle is 1500-2000)?

I am trying to create a calculator that given certain conditions it would x amount of damage.
