(If you are trying to increase your frames per second in Call of Duty 4 check out this post: How To Increase Your FPS in COD4

COD4 Console Commands are a great tool to improve your Call of Duty experience. To open the console simply press the ~ key which is located directly below the escape key. I see a lot of people online trying to type commands into chat, this doesn’t work, you need to open the console. Then you can type in the commands, note they all begin with the key, located directly above the Enter key.

Lets take a look at some of the more useful and commonly used COD4 Console Commands.

cg_drawFPS 1

Displays your FPS (Frames Per Second) in the upper right hand corner. The higher your FPS the smoother the game runs, the lower your FPS the choppier the game runs.

cg_drawFPS 0

Turns off the FPS display in the upper right hand corner. Note that that 0 turns off any command while 1 turns it on.

cg_drawlagometer 1

Creates a graph in the lower left hand corner of your screen. For the top meter in the graph you want it to be mostly blue. Blue means you are refreshing in sync with the server and everything is going good. Yellow is bad, it means you are out of sync with the server. Don’t panic if you have a little bit of yellow, but you still want most of it to be blue. For the bottom meter you want it to be green. Green means your packet transfer is smooth, red and yellow are bad and means your data transfer is flaky.

cg_FOV 80

This changes your visible field of view from 65 degrees to 80 degrees. It essentially moves you back so you can see a wider area. The drawback is that everything then appears smaller. I don’t know if it is better to have a larger FOV, I think it is mostly based on personal preference.

All COD4 console commands:

Points of interest
=============
com_maxfps “125″
cl_packetdup “2″
cl_maxpackets “63″
rate “25000″
snaps “30″
cg_drawFPS “Simple”
cg_drawFPSLabels “1″
cg_drawLagometer “1″

Commands
/serverinfo – This command shows the server settings and configurations.
/map

– This will load the given map.
/map_rotate – This will load the next map of the rotation. This is set in the ‘sv_maprotation’ file on your server.
/map_restart – This will restart the current map.
/fast_restart – This will restart the current map just like /map_restart but is much faster as it will not load the map again. It will just restart the map.
/status – This shows information about the connected players. This includes the client ID, score, ping, GUID, name and IP address. The ID and name can be used for the following commands.
/tell [player id] – This will display a message to a specific player. The ID is given with the /status command.
/clientkick [player id] – This will kick a player according to its ID (given with the /status command).
/kick [player name] – This will do the same as the /clientkick command, but this command requires the player’s name. However, some names are very difficult to enter (with colour codes etc.), thats why the /clientkick commands is easier in use. You can use ‘all’ as player name, this will kick all players from the server.
/onlykick [player name] – Does the same as /kick as far as I know.
/banClient [player id] – This command will ban a player according to its ID. The player’s GUID will be added to ban.txt.
/banUser [player name] – This command does the same as the /banclient command. However, this requires you to fill in the player’s name, it is therefore advised to use the /banclient command (names can be long or contain colour codes).
/tempBanClient [player id] – This will temporary ban a player using the player’s ID. The length of a temporary ban can be changed in the server configuration file.
/tempBanUser [player name] – This will temporary ban a player using the player’s name.
/unbanUser [player name] – This will unban a user according to the player’s name. If the player’s name appears more than once in ban.txt, you can edit the file and remove the banned player manually.
/dumpuser [player name] – This will give information about the player.
/killserver – As the name says, it will shut your server down.

RCON usage
It is very likely that you are not playing at the same location (IP address) as your server is. Thats where we use RCON (= remote control) commands for. Using RCON is very easy, just add ‘/rcon ‘ in front of the commands above (removing the ‘/’ of those commands). But before you can use RCON, you will have to login:
/rcon login [password] – Fill in the password of the server and you can use RCON commands.

Examples of RCON commands:
/rcon map mp_pipeline
/rcon status
/rcon banclient 5

More (useless) commands
/serverstatus – This will give you information about the server settings and a quick list of online players.
/serverinfo – This will give you some diversified about IW settings on your server and some useless information.
/systeminfo – This will give you a list of the settings your server has.
/clientinfo – This will give you information about the yourself as client.
/showip – This will provide your IP address.
/cmdlist – This will show a complete list of commands available.

Most Call of Duty players just aim their weapon in the general direction of the wall, start spraying, and hope to get a kill. This is a bad plan. Here are a few tricks you can try to effectively kill enemies by shooting through walls in Call of Duty 4.

Aim down your sights – Firing from the hip makes gives you terrible accuracy, which even though you are blindly shooting through a wall, still matters. You have to remember that the goal here isn’t just to have the bullet hit the wall, but go through and hit someone on the other side of the wall. Aiming down the your sights is also very important so that the bullet hits the wall at a 90 degree angle, which brings us to our next tip.

Shoot the wall at a 90° angle – As we have previously explained on this site calculating the damage a bullet does after going through a wall in Call of Duty 4 can be a complex process. One simple applicable fact is that bullets entering a wall straight on will do more damage than bullets entering a wall at an angle. This means that for max damage bullet damage you should move along a wall firing down your sights straight ahead.

Use your UAV – This one should be obvious. Use your UAV to pinpoint the exact location of targets on the other side of the wall, at which point you should have no trouble getting a kill. If you can catch the map just after it refreshes you will have the best chance, otherwise the target may have moved.

Aim at crouched level – Aiming at the level where in enemies body would be crouching gives you the best chance of a kill. This is because it is also the center of mass of standing Call of Duty players. You won’t be able to hit players that are prone, but if aiming that low means you would only have the feet of standing or crouching players to hit.

I hope you found this Call of Duty 4 bullet penetration tips helpful, feel free to comment and add your own.

A Ninja Defuse in Call of Duty 4 is when a defending player camps a bomb site in Search and Destroy waiting for a bomb plant. The instant the bomb plant happens the defending player sneaks up and stealthy defuses the bomb while the offense is not paying attention. Check the video below for an example of just what I am talking about.

Getting a successful Ninja Defuse off is probably one of the most satisfying things a person can do in a Call of Duty 4 Search and Destroy game. Not only does it give you that nice full leet feeling but it absolutely humiliates and demoralizes the opposing team. It isn’t the impossible task that some people make it out to be. The most relevant variables, the skill/blindness of your opponents and plain old luck are out of your hands. There are a few things you can control to get successful Ninja Defuses more often.

First and most importantly is to choose a good camping spot to wait for the plant. Some maps and bomb sites just don’t have enough cover to camp, so if that is the case don’t camp that site. Second is to match your camouflage to the map and place you are camping. The guille suit snipers get is great for maps like Downpour, but I wouldn’t be using it on Chinatown. In that same vein you want to have the smallest weapon possible out when you are camping, a Pistol is much harder to see than someone lugging around a RPD trying to camp. Pistols that aren’t silenced are prefered but not required. because the length of the suppressor sticks out quite a bit. When you actually get camped sit absolutely still still. Aim and stare straight ahead, any motion whatsoever and you will be spotted. Finally you need patience, you probably won’t get a Ninja Defuse on your first try but after the first it gets much easier.

After much demand here is the first installation of our series reviewing the best camping spots on each Call of Duty 4 map. We are looking for spots that are practical for competitive gameplay. This means we will not be looking at places you can strategic jump to if you have a spare 15 minutes in the middle of a frag fest. Today we will be looking at the spots on the new Call of Duty 4 maps, Creek, Chinatown, Killhouse and Broadcast. I did my best to show where the spots are with pictures but it can be a little bit difficult to get show in enclosed areas.

Click the images for larger versions.

This place on Broadcast is a little more difficult to get to than others, so here are some directions on how to get there. 1. Jump on the chairs by the vending machine 2. Jump on the picture frame like objects on the wall 3. Jump from there to the top of the vending machine 4. Jump from the top of the vending machine to your final destination atop the TV. None of the jumps are particularly difficult or long, you just need to know the sequence. Once you get there it is a great location to camp because virtually no one will check upwards for enemies, so you can just pick them off as they run by.

The picture doesn’t show this very well, this location is on the 2nd story of the building with the mounted machine gun which looks into the grassy field on Chinatown. Being able to hide behind the fridge and pull an Indiana Jones and escape death every time a grenade is thrown up is extremely useful. That building receives a huge amount of fire and explosives so having a good place to hide is paramount.

This picture is of the trail on Creek right below the major, more travel trial. You can get to it by either dropping down from the upper trail or walking over the various log bridges to it. It is a great camping spot because it gives you visual access to the trial above you, the entrance to the cave and the large open field on the other side. Basically you are covering all possible travel points that an enemy player can take. Couple this with the fact that you blend right into the wall and most Call of Duty 4 players don’t bother checking it for enemies and you have a great spot.

Killhouse might be the most hated map, after Shipment for Call of Duty 4 players but with a proper number of players it can still be enjoyable. This spot under the wooden stairs is most useful if you are playing with a large number of people though because you have such a small range of movement under the wooden structure. It can come in extremely handy if you just want to spawn kill on Free for All games to level (although I don’t recommend that strategy).

I hope you found this camping/hiding spots useful, please feel free to suggest your own though.

This is a useful little trick for Call of Duty 4 if you are planting a Claymore in a high risk area and want to get in and out of there fast. It is a must have if you see an enemy approaching just as you put down a Claymore and need to react to the thread. Don’t use this in low risk area because it is not worth the resources it takes to pull off.

Normally when you plant a Claymore in Call of Duty you have to wait for the planting motion to play itself out for several seconds before you can pull out your gun. You can totally bypass that motion by throwing a normal or special grenade. What you want to do is wait just until the moment the Claymore hits the ground and immediately hit the relevant key to throw a grenade in Call of Duty 4.You will skip the Claymore plant motion and go immediately to the grenade throwing motion.

You do have to wait some time for the grenade to be thrown but #1 the grenade gives you some sort of cover and potential for a kill and #2 the grenade throwing motion is much shorter than the claymore plant motion so you will be saving time overall. After throwing the grenade you can quickly switch back over to your primary weapon. It takes some practice to get the coordination and timing down for the Call of Duty Claymore fast plant so be patient. Please comment you have any questions or things to add.

Sadly many players are not aware of modded servers and the custom maps available for Call of Duty 4 PC players. For those unaware modded maps and gametypes are simply changes and upgrades made to the game by average people who love the game. There are mods for just about anything you could want, from drivable vehicles to entirely new maps to totally new weapons. So how do we get access to these mods and open Call of Duty 4 to a whole new realm of possibilities?

Playing on modded servers is simple. First go to the list of online multiplayer Call of Duty 4 servers like you would if you were joining an other game. Then click the “Filter” option from the menu at the top of the screen. This will bring up a menu allowing you to sort servers by different specifications; click the button that says “Mods” and change it to “Yes” or “All”. Then refresh the server list and a bunch of modded servers will pop up, choose a populated one and join the game.

You will then be prompted with a download screen which will automatically download the necessary information that allows you to play the game. Depending on your connection speed and the speed of the server on the other end this can take anywhere from minutes to hours to happen. After the download is finish Call of Duty will restart and automatically join the modded game. That’s all you need to do, you can now frag like you would on any other game!

Please comment if you have any questions on this tutorial or how to join modded servers.

A lot of Call of Duty 4 players feel that Shotguns are terrible weapons because of their lack of range; but if you have ever seen a skilled Shotgun class player you know this not to be the case. Shotguns can be amazing weapons, but the way you move and kill enemies with them is different than any other gun most people lack the skill to use them to their full potential. So here is a quick guide on how to use the shotguns in Call of Duty not just in close range situations, but to dominate any map and in any scenario. Also be sure to take a look at our COD4 shotgun review to determine which of the shotguns is the best.

The key to pwning with the Shotgun in video games in general is not your aiming ability, the spread of the pellets is so large it’s almost impossible to miss, the key is to position yourself so your target is always within firing range. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you can’t get a kill with the M1014 if the guy your shooting at is half way across the map. Yet still see Call of Duty players trying to run into huge wide open places with their Shotgun only to be destroyed at range with a LMG.

Therefore to dominate with the Shotgun what you need to do is always move in small enclosed areas where you cannot be killed with a range weapon. This means avoiding high points on the map, getting to cover as long as possible and occasionally camping if you have to. Most players aren’t used to this style of play in Call of Duty 4 so you really need to make a conscious effort to move smart.

There are some maps where you have to move through wide open spaces, so if you get to a safe place and switch over to your Pistol or Overkill weapon. Equipping Extreme Condition in Perk slot 3 can also be useful on more open maps where running across without cover is unavoidable. Try out these movement tips for the Shotgun and you should be able dominate all your friends at Call of Duty 4 in no time.

Call of Duty 4 is all about positioning yourself so that you can see enemy players. If you can see the enemy you can shoot them, and if you can shoot them you can kill them which is what the game is all about. To acquire the line of sight to see enemy players most people position themselves in high places but on some maps the best way to see enemy players is by getting your face in the dirt and going prone. Two great examples of maps where going prone will allow to see the enemy players in Call of Duty 4 are Countdown and Wet Work.

Countdown is a totally open map outside of the large shields around the missile silos. As you can see in the image above by going prone though you can see the entire map. You have a full range of movement if you position yourself just in the indent formed by the missile silo and can also adjust your height as needed. It can be difficult just getting kills by shooting enemy players feet but for most weapons you do just as much damage hitting them in the foot with a bullet as you would hitting them in the chest with a bullet.

You can apply a similar technique to the packing containers on Wet Work, just not on quite a large scale as you can on Countdown. There are small rectangle holes on the bottom of the shipping containers that give you a clear shot to the other side, noted in the picture above. You can go prone and peer through the holes and get some easy kills on players camping the other side. Note that you can’t go prone right up against the container when you are doing this, you need to be a back a couple of feet.

If you have any thoughts or other tips in the same vain please share them with us in the comments sections.

The graphics of Call of Duty 4 is one of the things that makes the game great. You can see the shadows of every player, bountiful explosions dispersed across the map and even the reflection of the map around you in your sniper scope. The graphics of a sniper scope are particularly important though because it expands the players view of the map, and therefore enemy players. So can we use the reflection in a sniper scope to see enemies creeping us behind us or to stare around corners from a safe location?

I know I got you all riled up in the last paragraph, but unfortunately the answer is no, you cannot use the reflection in a sniper scope to gain any sort of strategic advantage. The problem is that reflection doesn’t accurately portray what is really behind you. To test this just try standing with a sniper and your back to a solid brick wall. Your scope should show that wall but instead it will just show a random canned image from that map. Basically what the scope reflection does is based on your location in the map it chooses from preset images that should resemble that background. If you step out of a certain location zone on the map it will load a totally new set off images. It isn’t the end of the world for Call of Duty 4, but making sniper scope reflections accurate would have provided another level of strategic depth to the game.
