Call of Duty 4 Best Sniper Rifle Analysis and Review
Next in our series of Call of Duty 4 weapon reviews we have the Sniper rifle. Sniper rifles are unique and amazing weapons because of their long range and one shot, one kill ability. All of our hard numbers come are coming from our Call of Duty Weapons Stats Chart, the damage multipliers are particularly important here. Using the chart we see that all sniper rifles do 70 damage and have a damage multiplier of 1.0, 1.1 or 1.5. For snipers the golden rule is the one shot kill, anything less and you might as well be using an assault rifle. So what multipliers do we need to meet this golden rule? A 1.0 multiplier will never one shot kill an enemy unless he was previously afflicted damage. A 1.1 multiplier will one shot the enemy if you are using the Stopping Power Perk. Finally, a 1.5 multiplier will one shot the enemy without the use of Stopping Power but if Stopping Power it is equipped it will one shot an enemy equipped with Juggernaut. These numbers might be a tad confusing now, but they will be become more clear and useful as we review the weapons. Without further ado here our analysis and review of all the Sniper Rifles, scroll to the bottom of the page for the short version.
M21 - The hands down best sniper rifle for hardcore matches because players start with 30 health instead of 100 health. The M21 does 70 damage with relatively poor damage multipliers, but for hardcore it is still easily enough to guarantee one shot kills no matter what part of the target you hit. The higher damage values of the other weapons just aren’t needed. It also has an incredibly low recoil which means you can spam 4-5 shots in the target area with reasonable accuracy.
R700 - The high scope sway make the it very difficult to control and means it takes more time to hold your breath and set up a hot. For that reason and factors stated above it is worse than the M40A3 except in rare cases involving Juggernaut in Call of Duty.
Dragunov - The damage multipliers of the Dragunov means it is usually outclassed by the other sniper rifles, except when using non-Stopping Power Perks. This is because adding Stopping Power provides virtually no benefit to the Dragunov. With our without Stopping Power it can only one shot to the Head, Neck and Torso. This opens up options for Perk 2, like adding Overkill and the P90 to create a hybrid sniper/rush class. This versatility gives the Dragunov some small niche capabilities in Call of Duty 4.
M40A3 - The best bolt action sniper rifle when using the Stopping Power perk. With Stopping Power the M40A3 will one shot kill on all parts of the body except for the exterior limbs. The closest weapon to compare it to is the R700. The advantages of the M40A3 over the R700 are it’s higher bullet capacity and it’s much lower scope sway. The one thing the R700 has going for it is it’s higher damage multiplier for Stomach shots. This provides little practical advantage except for making it slightly easier to one shot enemies with Juggernaut.
Barrett .50 Cal - The best semi-automatic Sniper Rifle when using Stopping Power. Whether or not the Barrett is better than the M40A3 is a matter of opinion, but the weapons are very similar. The Barrett is slightly at one single shot kills to Juggernaut enemies while the M40A3 has advantages when it comes it recoil. Personally I prefer the Barrett because of it’s strength in close quarters. In a tight spot you can quickly spam a full magazine at close range and probably get a kill.
The bottom line: The M21 is best for hardcore matches, the M40A3 and Barrett for normal matches and the Dragunov has some niche hybrid class abilities.

I dont know why but it seems that when I use a Barret with stopping power they survive 20% the time and when I use the M40 with stopping power they survive about 5% the time….I think it may be the poor accuracy on the Barret has less aim assist so Im constantly hitting the extier limbs intead of stomach shots…

Yes the M40 damage goes to 75 when equipped with the ACOG. That extra 5 damage means it’s the only Sniper Rifle that can single shot kill to the exterior limbs assuming you have Stopping Power equipped.

Well around 20% of the time it didn’t one shot and I don’t think there is that many people using juggernaut.

i think that the barrett is the best sniper because of its anti-juggernaut abilities and it can clear a room quick. All you have to remember is that the recoil will affect the next shot unless you hold your breath for a while.
I’m not much of a sniper, but when I do snipe, I prefer the M40A3 w/ claymores, stopping Power, and deep impact.

I use the M21 with stopping power on normal maps. The Barret is to loud with way to much recoil. The M21 can beat machine guns in close ranged combat too I find.
wow i might try to use the m21 but the R700 has a bit more recoil than the barrett and the barrett comes back to its place faster and can own campers with a little spamming. Do u use the m21 with a acog or not?

No-scoping in it’s general sense is based solely on luck, because of random deviations within the HUGE crosshairs. some people have said that they’ve found a method around this system and it seems quite beleivable. It’s completely unrealistic that the 50 cal. and the R700 have the same damage and damage multiplier values in the game, and there should be a lot more difference between the 50 cal. and the M21.

You sure ??? M40 uses the 7.62×51 mm NATO cartridge whilst the Heckler & Koch USP uses the 9 mm…hows that the same…
on the xbox 360 the stat bars on char creation says the drag is the same as the m21 but more damage
The bars on the Xbox 360 are totally inaccurate and say nothing about how the weapons actually work. Check out the weapon stats chart on this site which is correct and takes real data from the games program files.
The dragunov does have higher damage multipliers than the M21 so in some situations it does do more damage, but not always.
The M40A3 is the only weapon whose base damage is changed when it is equipped with the ACOG.
Stopping Power is useful with the Barret, it will give you more one shots against both Juggernaut and non Juggernaut enemies.

You forgot to take into account how accurate the sniper rifles are. The M21’s bullets rarely match up perfectly with the crosshairs. Same with the Dragunov.

The bolt-action rifles are generally more accurate than semi-auto rifles, which makes up for the slower fire rate. Also, a difference between the M40 and R700 that I have noticed is that the R700 sights faster. This compensates for the lower clip size and higher recoil, but doesn’t provide a really advantage for most players.
How does the .50 Cal with stopping power do more to enemies than the other rifles with stopping power? R700 sniper -extra ammo- -stopping power- -deep impact- and smoke bomb is the best sniper setup!
i love using the agod m4 sniper rifle. especially on close range maps.
i use the scope for long range.
the best way to understand it is to force yourself to only use that gun for days, and using any other gun would be areat at some points, but once you figure how the m4 sniper rifle shoots and reacts it is friggin amazing.
no one can teach you how to use it you have to simply figure it out yourself
Personally, I like the AK-47 with stopping power, frag * 3, deep inpact, and red dot sight.
Seriously, it’s the best assult rifle in the game with used correctly. That and the M4 Carbine.

Is the Dragonauv having the same damage with and without stopping power? i can hit an enemy in the chest and he aint dieing. so i wondered if the stopping power really is doing a diffrent or not?
The dragunuv kills in 1 shot for me almost every single time when using the acog scope and stopping power. Using the regular scope it takes like 2 shots. why is this?
I think that the M40A3 is a way better gun than all of the other guns put together, its is a good gun with low recoil If you know how to use it you can be an amazing sniper. the M21 is an easy gun to use thats why all the trash players use it because it has low recoil so u can spray a full clip into someone and kill them that way which does not make you good.
I think that the best sniper rifle has to be the R700 because it just seems better for hitting enemies when they are on the move.

i love using the agod m4 sniper rifle. especially on close range maps.
i use the scope for long range.
the best way to understand it is to force yourself to only use that gun for days, and using any other gun would be areat at some points, but once you figure how the m4 sniper rifle shoots and reacts it is friggin amazing.
no one can teach you how to use it you have to simply figure it out yourself

Is the Dragonauv having the same damage with and without stopping power? i can hit an enemy in the chest and he aint dieing. so i wondered if the stopping power really is doing a diffrent or not?

The dragunuv kills in 1 shot for me almost every single time when using the acog scope and stopping power. Using the regular scope it takes like 2 shots. why is this?

I think that the M40A3 is a way better gun than all of the other guns put together, its is a good gun with low recoil If you know how to use it you can be an amazing sniper. the M21 is an easy gun to use thats why all the trash players use it because it has low recoil so u can spray a full clip into someone and kill them that way which does not make you good.

hey i do admit that the m40 can fire faster… accuratley…. i mean try it for yourself… aim a barrett at a spot on something and see how much time between shots you have to re-aim and then try with a m40….. and you’ll se that because of the barretts’ high recoil you can shoot faster with a m40….. its wack!

The Barret 50.cal is not good with a scope. It bounces to far of. So get the ACOG scope for it and try it out. When you shoot it the recoil is much less. You should have sight of hand and steady aim if you run around with it.

Hands down, R700 is the best bolt action rifle. It has higher damage than the m40a3 without stopping power. Works best in my opinion with no augo scope (or watever that crap is) and blue tiger camo. Even though camo makes no difference. works great with silenced m4 carbines and bandolior and iron lungs perk
.50 cal is the best weather you like it or not. and if this game was realistic you would know what i mean. Its rang should be all the way up cuz a real one can hit a target dead on from 2 miles away and it should kill in one hit no matter what cuz the bullets are fucking HUDGE! and real ones just dont kill the fucking blow the target to pices.

yuns are fuckin crazy stop sayin if the game was realistic bc if it was you would need to know wind speed distance and everything else practically… and the .50 is the best in RL but on the game M40 is (in my opinion). R700 is 50/50 kill in one shot but it has to be upper chest or head shot M40 is 1 shot kill from legs up. .50 is good also but way too much kick. The class i use and perks is M40 with acog, 3x frag claymores or bandolier, stopping power, and steady aim. If your good at noscoping M40 is unstoppable with stoping power and steady aim.
