Call of Duty 4 Best SMG Sub Machine Gun Analysis and Review
For our second to last weapon class review we have Sub Machine Guns. SMG are known for their excellent close medium to close range capabilities and in a pinch can even do some long range shooting. As always our weapon data is coming from our wonderful Weapon Stats Chart. So whats the best Sub Machine Gun or SMG in Call of Duty 4? Our review is below, scroll to the bottom of the page if you just want the short version
MP5 - A good sub machine gun for normal and hardcore matches. It’s recoil pattern bounces around in a circular shape, as opposed to the other SMG’s which whose recoil knocks the weapon around only on the vertical axis. The recoil makes it strong not only close range encounters, but at fairly significant ranges. It’s closest competitor is the AK74u, in fact the weapons are almost identical. Both have the exact same damage values of 40-20, the same range 750-1000, the same rate of fire of 800 RPM and the same magazine capacity. The difference in recoil makes the MP5 a superior weapon to the Ak74u however.
AK74u - For reasons stated above the AK74u is generally slightly worse than the MP5. The only advantage the AK74u has is a slightly faster reload time and better bullet penetration. The difference between the weapons is small however. People that prefer a more vertically aligned recoil pattern should stick with the AK74u as opposed to the MP5.
Skorpion - A good SMG for Hardcore matches. The Skorpion has strong initial damage values of 50-20 but has a terrible range of 200-400. This means that your great initial damage of 50, which would two shot kill an enemy, drops down to a measly 20 damage after only 400 units of distance. To give you an idea of just how short 400 units is, the knife has a maximum range of 196. The terrible range and consequently terrible damage values makes the Skorpion totally unplayable for normal matches. It’s small clip size of 20 is made up for by it’s virtually non existent recoil. In hardcore games however where all you need is 30 damage for a kill the Skorpion becomes much more attractive.
P90 - The defining weapon of the SMG class. The P90 is known for it’s obscene rate of fire of 925 RPM and huge capacity of 50 rounds per magazine. It actually does less damage than the MP5, 30-20 but easily makes up for that in other areas. It has a fair amount of kick but the recoil is confined to a fairly small area so you can spray and pray to your hearts content. As a bonus for PC players it has a bug increasing your sprint distance x1.75 times their normal value. All of these characteristics make it the optimal rush weapon for both normal and Hardcore scrimmages.
Uzi - Perfectly identical to the P90 in almost every way. It has a slightly higher rate of fire, 950 RPM, actually the highest of any automatic weapon in Call of Duty 4. In exchange for this extra 25 RPM when compared to the P90 you have to lower your magazine capacity to 32 and acquire some higher recoil for the weapon. This means in general the Uzi is worse than the P90.
The bottom line: The P90 and MP5 are generally the best SMGs for normal and hardcore matches. The Skorpion is also playable for only Hardcore games.

I play with a skorpion on normal and I am better at sniping with it than with a sniper rifle so you guys are screwed up on that.

the p90 is my favorite gun, and i really like it and agree its one of the best. but i also love the mp5. great choices guys!
i like the P90 but for sniping its the M40A3 all the way with red tiger off course

You said the “circular” mp5 recoil of the mp5 was better that the “vertical” recoil of ths AK74u but isn’t vertical recoil far easier to manage than circular?
I’m playing with the scorpio in normal matches and I still gave a good K/D .My advice is not to put any attachment even the red dot sight , it increaces the recoil (I have tested that and it’s true and I know it’s difficult to aim trough the scorpio’s iron sight) In my apinion the scorpio is better that the mp5 because the mp5 may has better damge at mid range but it has bigger recoil ,but speed is essential and there is a big posibility to die while shoot at hip. I have put bomb squad ,slight hand and marty perks in the spec ops class .It’s a very good combination but you may change the sleight hand perk with stopping power .It still is a good combination for a close fight and going into campers nests
I shot the whole length of crossfire with silenced skorpion
so I think that the ak 74u and the skorpion are the best

Mp5 and P90 are overall the best, but the skorpion has a glitch, that when equipped with a silencer it’s range isn’t reduced.
mp5 top followed by ak74u closely
imo the mp5 is the best smg. its my favorite smg.

Great write up. Sure, all the biased fucks will call you wrong so they can be fanboys to their wepon. HOWEVER, I agreed with the review, and thought it was well put together.

Mp5 is one of the best guns in the entire game. Outstanding power great accuracy and decentt rang.
P90 is another great gun because of the great accuracy and fire rate it brings.
Uzi is close to the P90 but since it shoots so fast you have to reload a lot and the UZI has a slow reload spped.
Ak74 has great power but is to inaccurate.
Skorpion haha can be good in search,cage match or anygame you dont have to kill many people because its runs out of rounds to fast and takes time to reload.
(I have all guns golden but MP5 is my most coomon gun used)
Uzi all the way dude. Burst it and the ammo and recoil problems go away, and add on an ACOG to beef up the range. Along with Blue tiger skin, you have the stupidest looking, most effective subby. The perks you want with this combo of gun/attachment are steady aim for when the fights to close for the ACOG, bandoiler to keep it firing, and stopping power to help drop them quicker.
The AK74 has more recoil, but it’s madness to say circular recoil is easier to deal with. I find mid ranges much, much easier to handle at full auto with the AK than the MP5, however, the MP5 does have less total recoil, so it’s easier to get long ranges or headshots with burst firing- fire it like it was a pistol and there’s virtually no recoil.
Even thought the P90 sprint increase is a “bug” it makes sense cause the grip and weight of that weapon make it so easy to run with. Special thanks to the Lithuanian army for letting me play with their toys.
The majority of professionals use the ak74u so i dont know if that says anything
My good smg would be the Scorpion with the scilencer! The only problem is that it has les bullets and long reload time. So I play on Hardcore Teamdeath Match, my first perk is Bomb Squad, my seconed Slight of Hand, and third is Deep Impact!
Everything I can agree with but the Skorpion.
I almost only use the skorpion for longe range….with a silencer. It’s so accurate that all your bullets will land on target even if there are only 20. idk wat to say but at least try the skorpion out before giving it up.
