Call of Duty 4 is a great game. This is evident from the countless websites like this one devoted to it, the 11 million copies it sold worldwide and the overwhelmingly popular reviews it received from critics. But lets take a closer look at exactly why, from a game strategy and design standpoint it was so successful.

Weapon Customization and Perks - In the past most FPS games forced you to pick up weapons and perks as you went on in the game, only to loose them the moment you die. This makes it difficult for players to familiarize themselves with all the weapons and find their niche in the game. Create a Classes also give you some level of attachment to the being you are controlling and the weapons they are using, almost like an MMORPG would. The leveling system is also very similar to that of an MMORPG, you don’t just start with all the weapons and perks, you have to play the game and earn them. Call of Duty 4 also gives you as much time as you want to customize your Create a Classes, unlike say, Counter Strike where you have a few milliseconds to hit “B-1-4″ and go to town.

Thanks to the wonders of technology and recording software it is easy for any one of the 11 million Call of Duty 4 players out there to make a video devoted to the game. Most of the videos are should we say, sub par at best. But if you draw out of that large a pool you are bound to get some that are truly amazing. I have received a lot of questions lately about how range works in Call of Duty 4 so I thought I would make a single post instead of explaining it to a gazillion(really it’s that many) individual people. Note all this information comes from our Call of Duty 4 Weapon Stats Chart. Anyway on to the explanation.

First to clear up a common misconception, in Call of Duty 4 bullets will travel forever through the air until they exit the map or hit some sort of object (Enemy Player, Wall, Car etc). The amount of damage a bullet does change while it goes through the air. The best way to explain this is with an example, so lets take someone firing an unsilenced MP5.

Being able to kill people through walls with bullet penetration is obviously a useful skill to have in Call of Duty 4. Most Call of Duty players just aim their weapon in the general direction of the wall, start spraying, and hope to get a kill. This is a bad plan. Here are a few tricks you can try to effectively kill enemies by shooting through walls in Call of Duty 4.

Aim down your sights - Firing from the hip makes gives you terrible accuracy, which even though you are blindly shooting through a wall, still matters. You have to remember that the goal here isn’t just to have the bullet hit the wall, but go through and hit someone on the other side of the wall. Aiming down the your sights is also very important so that the bullet hits the wall at a 90 degree angle, which brings us to our next tip.

Shoot the wall at a 90° angle - As we have previously explained on this site calculating the damage a bullet does after going through a wall in Call of Duty 4 can be a complex process. One simple applicable fact is that bullets entering a wall straight on will do more damage than bullets entering a wall at an angle. This means that for max damage bullet damage you should move along a wall firing down your sights straight ahead.

A Ninja Defuse in Call of Duty 4 is when a defending player camps a bomb site in Search and Destroy waiting for a bomb plant. The instant the bomb plant happens the defending player sneaks up and stealthy defuses the bomb while the offense is not paying attention. Check the video below for an example of just what I am talking about.

Getting a successful Ninja Defuse off is probably one of the most satisfying things a person can do in a Call of Duty 4 Search and Destroy game. Not only does it give you that nice full leet feeling but it absolutely humiliates and demoralizes the opposing team. It isn’t the impossible task that some people make it out to be.
